A Guide to Art Deco WeekendJanuary 15, 2015
Miami Beach has long been one of the world’s leading cultural hubs, particularly with respect to its unique heritage of Art Deco architecture. This iconic style is not only one of the most recognizable images of this vibrant community, but is an integral part of local and national history — hence why the Art Deco District is preserved as U.S. Historic Site.
To celebrate the beauty and symbolism of this distinct legacy, while at the same time recognizing Miami Beach’s Centennial, the city will be hosting Art Deco Weekend this January 16th-18th.
Sponsored annually by the Miami Design Preservation League, the event takes place across much of Ocean Drive, where some of the world’s highest concentrations of Art Deco architecture remain. This year’s festivities will feature 140 vendors lining across Lummus Park, showcasing vintage and handmade paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, and posters.
Ocean Drive will also be taken over by street entertainment, classic cars, and all types of performers, including stilt walkers, magicians, and dancers.
Additionally, there will be a series of lectures held inside the Art Deco Museum (1001 Ocean Drive) that will explore the unique history of Art Deco and how it has uniquely endured in Miami Beach. An event known as the Promenade will take you back to almost a century of musical styles from the 1920’s, 30’s, & 40’s, when jazz musicians and big bands perform and attendees can dance. Models will also be showcasing clothing and accessories made or inspired by the famous Art Deco era.
Another highlight will be the Deco Dance-A-Thon, which will take place on Saturday, January 17, 3-6 p.m. and is going to be sponsored by Art Deco Napier with the prizes going to the best dancer and the best costume.
Clearly, there will be no shortage of great activities and attractions to look forward to in this unique weekend event.
